In East Atlanta, the owner of EAV Barbell Club has posted a sign at their gym that declares that no police or active duty military members are allowed to work out there. Obviously, this isn’t going over too well. Tommy Lefever, a police officer and boxer, said he'd like to challenge the gym's owner, Jim Chambers, to a match at an upcoming boxing event. His intentions are to create an open conversation via the ring, in order to improve community relationships.
According to Jim Chambers, who owns EAV Barbell Club, he has had the "No Cops" or military personnel policy since it opened. Chambers, a lifelong political activist, defends the controversial policy. He said groups who work out there are generally minorities who are uncomfortable with the presence of law enforcement agents.
This seems like it has the potential to do any number of things, including great harm. We hope if it goes down, it ends with sweaty hugs between two men who feel mutual respect for one another.
