If the idea of a sheet of dead fish covering a New York canal excites you as much as it excites us then you're in luck! In Hampton Bays, New York, a town gathered to behold the sight of a massive amount of dead bunker fish just floating in the canal. Officials think they were chased by a school of bluefish, then with the locks closed, the bunkers were trapped all together. Then, there was not enough oxygen for that sheer amount of fish and they all ended up suffocating. Science is cool!
With the fishing, crabbing and other sea food catching industries ending their seasons, the fish will be picked up and trucked up north or just left for the crabs and birds. According to resident, Ira Freiband, "Nothing goes to waste in nature." Too bad all those fish didn't turn up in the area before the summer was over! People would have had even more of a field day!
