From time to time, we hear about restaurants around the country conducting various food challenges to get themselves a little publicity. Eat an entire pizza, get free pizza for life. Eat a big burrito, get free burritos for life. And in the case of Voodoo Doughnut
in the Denver area, if you eat a half-pound, 7-inch diameter donut in 80 seconds or less, you get a free meal and a button! Unfortunately, though, things turned deadly when 42-year-old Travis Malouff attempted the challenge on Sunday morning.
Paramedics were called to the scene when Malouff began choking while attempting the challenge. Malouff died due to "asphyxia, due to obstruction of the airway," the medical examiner confirmed. Two people in the donut shop attempted to help him by administering the Heimlich maneuver, but were unsuccessful.
Please think twice before stuffing a ton of food in your gullet for basically no personal gain. This guy is now dead because he wanted to eat a big donut really quickly. Pretty sad.
